The World Cup Version of 38-0
A perfect World Cup is 7-0 — and it has actually been done once. A World Cup isn't 38 matches: from the 32-team format onward, winning the whole thing takes seven matches — three in the group, then four knockout rounds. So the perfect World Cup isn't 38-0. It's 7-0: seven wins in ninety minutes each, no draws, no extra time, no penalty roulette.
Has anyone gone 7-0 at a World Cup?
Exactly once in the modern era. Brazil in 2002 won all seven of their matches in normal time on the way to the title — Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho doing the scoring. Every other champion dropped something on the road: France 1998 needed a golden goal and a shootout, Italy 2006 won it from the spot, Spain 2010 lost their opening group game and Argentina 2022 famously lost to Saudi Arabia before lifting the trophy. Seven from seven is the tournament's version of the Invincibles — except someone actually finished it.
How the World Cup Mode works
Same ritual you know from the league game: the wheel deals you a nation and a World Cup edition — Senegal 2022, Germany 2026, Portugal 2018 — and you draft one player at a time into your starting XI. Then the tournament plays out match by match on a live pitch: three group games, the knockouts, extra time and penalties where fate demands. Win the final and you are champions; win all seven in ninety minutes and you join Brazil 2002.
